Barry Irick

The year was 2015 and I was close to the end of my college career, having spent the past eight years pursuing a master’s in physics. I had casually watched some twitch streams throughout the past couple years prior, mostly interested in watching other people play games I had known and loved. One fateful day, I was looking at Super Mario 64 in particular, and noticed a certain Bengerman10 who was streaming himself playing it for the first time. I was instantly captivated by his warm, welcoming demeanor. There were these little in-stream bets about how many times Ben would die before completing that level, and I was always optimistic; perhaps a poor choice in hindsight. This group didn’t exactly have a name at the time, but quickly became what was known as “The Bean Pot”, lovingly named after Ben’s stream’s chat currency. Years later, the community was reworked under a new banner, “Epilogue Gaming”, which you all now know and love. What I remember most is not the bigger picture, but the wonderful people who are a part of it and the magical moments I’ve shared with many of them.

I see myself as filling in a more subtle role in Epilogue Gaming. While there is a large focus on the narrative of games – a unique viewpoint that isn’t seen very often among popular review sites – I tend to focus on the gameplay side of things. In the famous words of a one Reggie Fils-Aimé, “If it’s not fun, why bother?”. That’s not to say fun and narrative can’t go hand-in-hand; in fact, it’s sometimes quite the opposite. I like to stay grounded in the ‘gaming’ aspect of Epilogue Gaming, having written some reviews in the old three-and-out style and helping manage the new Epilogue Game Club. I plan on writing more in-depth articles focusing on the gameplay in relation to the narrative, as well as continuing to support the community in any way I can.

I see Epilogue Gaming continuing to grow, both in size and scope. We have already done amazing feats, such as bringing in over $2,000 for charity in a single 48 hour marathon. As more people find our unique viewpoint and niche, we’ll be able to pull off more and more community events and produce more amazing content for everyone’s enjoyment.

Since Epilogue Gaming’s inception, I’ve always been around supporting any and all of our community members. I’m always hanging out in the community discord, and am often seen streaming at my channel found at https://www.twitch.tv/roymaster4. Feel free to message me at any time for any reason at all. I’m always glad to say hi or critically discuss a game.
