I followed Ben on twitch in 2016 and watched consistently for a couple months until he no longer showed up in my live followed channels feed. A couple years went by and, having added Ben as a friend on facebook, I saw a post of his that mentioned games in an academic light. It intrigued me, considering I’d been developing my own academic perspective of games since I stopped playing them competitively in 2014. That was the first time I visited the Epilogue Gaming website and I spent a lot of time on that single visit. I noticed there was a twitch tab at the top and followed it to Ben’s live stream only to find out that somehow, probably through the infamous twitch unfollow bug, I had unfollowed Ben’s channel. I immediately sparked a conversation about my rediscovery of his work, especially Epilogue Gaming, and expressed my interest in learning more about the group behind it all. From there, I pitched the idea for Musings, a short, deep dive podcast that would explore thought experiments regarding games as art, literature, and a storytelling medium.
My role may be summarized as the “jack of all trades.” I’ve done everything from reviews to event graphics to video essays. I try to put my best work forward wherever we need it and I’m not afraid to tackle new projects and learn new skills along the way. I’ve adopted the mentality that simply getting work done results in the development of our long-term goals while satisfying our short-term goals. Epilogue Gaming is an ambitious community in its infancy, and managing those ambitions should help us turn them from visions into reality.
Musings is my love letter to philosophy and gaming guised as a podcast. I get to explore and apply thought experiments and then I’m challenged to condense them into bite-size audio presentations. I am most proud of the series On Play in which I argue for games as art by comparing Picasso to Pac Man. I am also very proud of our video series Visualizing the Narrative, which feels to me like another thought experiment operating on a different axis than Musings.
I tend to float around discord and twitch more than anywhere else, usually engaging with the community on recent topics in our content or simply stopping by to chat from time to time. If you’re interested in contacting me, reach out via the EG community discord.
